Lauren felt miserable. For one, it was colder here in England than it had been in several years; she could hardly stand the normal winters. For another, Bryce had been acting strange around her, and she around him. And lastly, there was the whole Tradger thing. She sighed in frustration as she tightened her jacket around her. In all honestly, it wasn't HER jacket, but her twin brother's, Landon's. Why was it that guys' jackets always seemed to be warmer than girls'? Well, whatever the case, she wasn't going to take a single step outside in her own jacket.
As she opened the huge oaken doors, a blast of cold air hit her face and she winched. "God damnit, I hate the cold!" She exclaimed bitterly to herself, using one hand to pull her hat more tightly on her head. Lauren marched out resolutely toward Hogwart's gate, as she had every morning at precisely six-thirty. Levi would be there. Her sour mood lightened considerably; the discovery that her brother was not, in fact, dead, had truly thrown her entire world into light again. Though his appearance was what was causing all of the other problems in her life, ironically, she wouldn't trade it for the world.
Her feet crunched against the frozen grass. As of yet, it hadn't begun to snow, which was somewhat odd, since England was supposedly rainy. And since it was so cold, the rain would obviously turn to snow. Assuming it ever actually decided to rain/snow again. She made it to the gates and sat on a rock just inside them, waiting. While she waited, she rubbed her hands together quickly in an attempt to warm herself up some, but failed.
A half hour went by, and she began to get worried. Where was he? Thankfully for her, there was a very easy way to find out where he was. Using her velimency, she located him somewhere out in the Forbidden Forest. "What in the world are you doing out in the middle of the Forbidden Forest at night?" asked Lauren to him silently, but received no answer. Strangely, she couldn't even detect thought...It was as if he was completely thoughtless. Literally. Well, apparently she was going to have to go him instead.
Keeping her wand out and lit, she started into the forest, feeling very wary and apprehensive. Though she knew she could just about fend off whatever appeared here, she also knew that the Forest held many secrets...For all she knew, some creature that hadn't even been discovered could randomly decide to show its face to her tonight. 'Well at least it's not the full moon....That has to be good...' thought she to herself grimly, continuing to follow Levi's vibe deep into the forest.
Finally she came upon him standing alone in the middle of a clearing, his back to her. Just as she too entered the frozen meadow, it began to snow. "Figures it would start to snow now," Lauren said out loud, resigned. Levi turned toward her, an odd expression on his face, though she didn't think it was because of her comment. Curiously enough, she still couldn't read his mind easily, though she knew she could if she forced through his occlumency shield. How strange that he of all people would use occlumency around HER. It actually stung a bit, but she said nothing. "So why are you standing way out here?"
His face didn't change, expression wise, as she came closer towards him, "Waiting for you,"
The playful annoyance she had been feeling slowly left her as she continued to study him. Something was wrong, "Why?" asked she cautiously, stopping a few feet in front of him, "Couldn't you have told me way back at the castle?"
"No," Said he quietly, his hazel eyes peering into hers, troubled, "I don't think I can't fight against Alizibeth in the battle, Lauren. I have to fight with her."
Shock was evident on her face as she raced through why he couldn't, and why he had brought her way out here to tell her this. Surely he wasn't planning on hurting her if she told him they were going to be on opposite sides...Quickly, she did a mental sweep of the clearing and a few dozen feet around it; she and him were the only people there. Then she turned her attention back to her brother. "What? Why? People are going to die in this battle! People you know and care about!"
"You're right. They are," agreed him simply, but as Lauren was about to speak, added, "No matter who wins." Lauren's mouth closed abruptly.
"Who?" asked she just as simply, "Who is going to die if Alizibeth loses?"
"You."
She stared at him with unblinking eyes, and for a moment, her mind went blank, clouded from comprehension of her brother's words. "How...how do you this?" Asked she at last, blatant shock and disbelief in her tone. There wasn't a logical explanation for this. There couldn't be. There was no way anything could actually be said by him that would make sense.
He smiled at her grimly, possibly guessing what she was thinking. "If you're in this fight, then you're going to protect Tradger. You know exactly what's going to happen, where it's going to happen, and when it's going to happen. He doesn't. You'll protect him, he'll live...But you won't." Levi paused, his eyebrows moving just slightly, though no other part of him inched. The old Levi never would have been like that, thought she absent-mindedly as she tried to get a grasp on what he was saying to her.
"The choice is between you and him for me. And I don't know him," There was regret in his eyes; Levi still couldn't remember anyone. "Come with me. Join Alizibeth. Join Rae with me." said he, his eyes suddenly fierce and almost desperate, "A future with her as empress isn't so bad. I've been there. I've seen it, Laur. And maybe we could change fate...Maybe there would be a chance we could have him survive too."
But before he was even done, she was shaking her head. "I can't do that." There wasn't a choice, really. She had already sacrificed so much for him. Her own life meant very little if it was the last thing she had to give. If she had to give it.
His eyes hardened, "You're sentencing yourself to death." said he with almost a snarl; no, the old Levi never would have done this. "Alizibeth will listen to me. You'll be the first to be taken out of the fighting. You'll be safe."
"I have to go," Said she quietly, turning her back to the person who had been her brother once upon a time. Who still WAS her brother, to some degree, though a stranger in most aspects. Behind her, she heard a resigned sigh, then a 'pop' of apparation. By this time, there was a nice layer of snow on her clothes and on the ground. However pretty a picture it was with the moonlight shining on the glistening whiteness, her mind was in a totally different place than he Forbidden Forest.
So it had come down to a choice of his life or hers. How ironic. She always knew he would end up killing her someday, just like Kael had. But no, this would be a different type a death. Not just a death of her heart, of her soul, of her inner being; all that could and had been rebuilt. This would be the final death, the ending of all endings. And yet, she knew what she would choose the exact moment the choice was given to her. Tradger would live; she would die. It was easy, much too easy...Maybe Tradger was right. Maybe she DID have a death wish or something.
She wasn't sure how long it took her to walk back to Hogwarts, back through the gates. She wasn't even sure what made her walk toward the Quidditch Pitch; it was just a habitual action, she supposed. The snow was almost glowing from the light of the moon, this time more so than in the woods because of the fewer trees here. Lauren paused in the middle of the pitch, then lay down on her back. Using her wand, she murmured a spell that would keep moisture from seeping through the fabric, then proceeded to stare at the stars above her.
Was it really so long that her grandfather had shown her all the constellations, all the stories that went with them? That her father had pointed out her star so she would never be lost, never have a need to be scared? That Tradger had shown her his star, a star that he had said could be hers as well if she ever lost sight of her own. Which, for a long time, she had. But there it was, bright and sparkling above her. It was very nearly impossible to believe that, at one time, it had been gone. Tradger's star was also visible. An odd, thoughtful smile appeared over her face. Almost, as if everything that had happened within the last few hours was unimportant. As if none of it affected her life. Or her death.
